"Coach E" is one of the community members that resuscitated the HHI Crew Club. He began coaching in 2007. He rowed for his high school and for Cornell University as well as the New Haven Rowing Club and currently rows with the Palmetto Rowing Club. He has a Level II Coaching Certification from the US Rowing Association. Dave is married to Christine and lives in Sea Pines Plantation.
Dr. Lu Strayer
Coach Lu began rowing in 8th grade in CT in 1949 sweeping and self-taught sculling. He was in the first Frosh crew at Princeton University in 1954, Varsity Heavyweight 1955-1957, and placing 4th in the Olympic Trials (4-) in 1956. Lu was the Team Doctor for the Jr. National Rowing Team in Belgrade in 1978 then went on to be the Team Doctor for the National Rowing Team from 1974-1994 in numerous international locations. He was Chairman of Sports Medicine for US Rowing from 1982-1992. Lu and his wife, Mary Ann, moved to Hilton Head in 1995. He won a bronze medal at the 1997 US Rowing Masters Nationals in the Father-Daughter 2x. His daughter, Ann, was on the 1998 Olympic Team. Lu also holds a Level 2 Coaching Certification from US Rowing.
Michael lives in Toronto, Canada and began rowing in 1987. His two sons and daughter rowed in high school and at Queens University. He was president of the Hanlan Boat club (www.hanlanboatclub.ca) and the UCC and Havergal parents rowing associations. Both schools had large rowing teams and he started coaching high school with them. His crews medaled in several Canadian school events and he competed and medaled as a master in eights, fours, pairs and doubles. He is a Level II rowing coach. Michael and his wife Margot have been coming to Hilton Head for the past 6 years and he started coaching with us four years ago.
